(LAFAYETTE) - The American Red Cross has named Northwest Indiana as a national level disaster area after last week's floods destroyed hundreds of homes and displaced thousands of residents.
Tippecanoe County Red Cross Executive Director Debbie Elsner says declaration means more than 50 volunteers from across the country will reinforce the local agency's efforts.
Elsner says the volunteers will work with the nine local Red Cross chapters in the region to help flood victims with short term recovery efforts during the coming weeks. Governor Daniels plans to ask for federal help for flood victims.
Three people, including two children, died during the flooding.
