(ANDERSON) - An Anderson veterinarian had to put down 34 dogs and cats at a shelter Friday because they were all sickened by a virus.

In all 10 cats, 10 dogs and 14 puppies diagnosed with parvovirus were euthanized. Parvo is a highly contagious virus that causes diarrhea, depression and suppression of white blood cells.

The doctor didn't know if the animals had been brought to the shelter sick or whether they caught the virus from each other. He plans to return to the shelter to evaluate each animal next week.
