Last updated on Friday, January 18, 2008

(PORTAGE) - The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating an accident that killed a worker at a metal treatment plant in Portage.

Portage police identify the victim as 25-year-old Jacob Amundsen of Merrillville. The accident took place Wednesday at Precoat Metals.

Porter county coroner Vicki Deppe says Amundsen was working in an area where steel coils are loaded by crane. He appeared to have been struck in the head by a 35,000-pound steel coil.

Precoat Metals says the company is cooperating in the investigation but could not release further details.
