Merrillville Faces Crime Spree, Departure Of Officers

Last updated on Sunday, January 6, 2008

(MERRILLVILLE) - The bodies of homicide victims have been piling up in Merrillville.

In less than a month, police have investigated five homicides in town, a surprising number considering Merrillville had just two homicides during all of 2006.

Since December 29th, eight people have been shot in the town, including three homicide victims.

Councilmen say safety has always been a top priority in Merrillville but agree additional police wouldn't have prevented the recent homicides because the victims had some connection to the killers in those cases.

But officials are concerned about losing police officers to higher-paying departments and jobs. The Merrillville police force could lose two to six more officers if pay isn't increased this year.
