(INDIANAPOLIS) - It's a way for low-income Indianapolis-area residents who may not qualify for state or federal assistance to get some help paying the high cost of heating.

The United Way Thursday kicked off its annual winter assistance fund drive. The goal is $350,000 dollars and the drive is already on its way.

Indianapolis Power and Light, Citizens Gas, and the Indianapolis Colts made donations in the form of more than $200,000 dollars.

United Way of Central Indiana President Ellen Annala says this fund helped more than 1200 families last year and the need this year is even greater. Annala says they saw a huge spike in requests for the annual United Christmas service program.
