(UNDATED) - The days of remembering to apply for Indiana's biggest property-tax break could be over.
If you own your own home, you qualify for a "homestead credit" when you pay taxes on it. All you have to do is apply with your county auditor--it's usually part of the paperwork when you buy your house.
But Rep. Phil Giaquinta (D-Fort Wayne) says the credit can get lost in the shuffle during closing. And some title companies have been washing their hands of the issue and leaving homeowners to file for the break themselves.
The House has voted unanimously to make the credit automatic. Last year, as it has in the past, the state rushed to extend the deadline to apply for the homestead credit, to help homeowners who forgot to apply for it and ended up with eye-popping tax bills.
