Gary Mayor Outraged After Shooting Of 13-Month-Old Boy

Last updated on Wednesday, January 30, 2008

(GARY) - Gary Mayor Rudy Clay is expressing outrage at the shooting death of a 13-month-old boy in what his mother described as a carjacking.

A spokeswoman for the mayor says police have told the mayor that they have identified a person of interest in the shooting.

Police say 29-year-old Kwana Shaw was driving with her son, Josiah, Monday night when a man forced his way into the car. The car was found with the boy inside about a half mile away in Gary.

Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Jeff Wells says the toddler was shot once in the chin and once near his left hip. He was pronounced dead at a Gary hospital.

Wells says Kwana Shaw was shot multiple times. A hospital official declined to comment on her condition.

A witness told police that she saw a man running from the car.
