(EVANSVILLE) - Regardless of whether city leaders decide to renovate Roberts Stadium or build a new arena, either project would first have to pass a voter referendum to move forward under a bill introduced in the current Indiana General Assembly session by Senate Republicans.

Senate bill 18 would require capital projects costing more than $7 million to be approved at a local referendum.

The bill is eligible for a third reading vote in the Senate. If it passes, the bill would become law July 1.

The city is expected to make a decision on the future of Roberts stadium after it receives a recommendation from a consulting firm that has been studying the facility's useful life. A recommendation is expected as soon as March.
