(STATEHOUSE) - Legislators are debating whether to cut your property taxes or eliminate them entirely -- and the governor is leaving the door open a crack for abolition.

Governor Daniels has proposed cutting property taxes by one-third. He's said the math doesn't work for abolishing them.

But the latest twist offered by some legislators would abolish them for homeowners only. Daniels says that would still require raising too many other taxes, but he says if there's a plan that can gather a majority, he'd consider it. "There are good questions that can be raised about it, but I've said, and our plan makes very plain, that I see a special status around home ownership," Daniels says. "It's the American dream."

Daniels is drawing one line in the sand: he says he won't raise state income taxes. His own plan would boost sales taxes by a penny, from 6 to 7-percent.
