(SPEEDWAY) - Approximately 800 people packed the auditorium at Speedway High School Thursday night to air their concerns over property taxes and proposed school consolidation at a town meeting held by Republican State Senator Michael Young.

A bipartisan commission wants school districts with fewer than 2,000 students -- like Speedway -- to consolidate with neighboring school districts.

Among those opposed to the plan is Denise Phillips, a teacher at Speedway High School and former school board member. Phillips pointed to information she found on the internet from Purdue University listing the 24 school corporations in Indiana that have the lowest tax levies.

Others voiced opposition to the plan to consolidate the Speedway Public Library with the Indianapolis- Marion County Public Library and a petition was circulated for people to sign

Senator Young says he'll take his constituents' concerns to the legislature.
