Woman Barred From Adopting Children

Last updated on Sunday, December 30, 2007

(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis woman will spend the next nine years in prison because of how she treated her adoptive children.

62-year-old Bessie Saffold admits to locking a child in a room and spanking others excessively. But it was what she did to a 7-year-old boy that got her in trouble with the law.

She punished the boy for wetting the bed by immersing him in hot water. He suffered scalding wounds that went untreated three weeks.

A judge imposed a 15-year sentence on Saffold - for neglect - but suspended six years. She was also barred from adopting children.
