TB Scare At High School Forces Tests

Last updated on Wednesday, December 12, 2007

(INDIANAPOLIS) - As a precautionary measure, the Marion County Health Department will provide tuberculosis tests to approximately 200 Southport High School students and staff on Friday after local health officials learned that an individual attending the school tested positive for the bacterial infection.

After meeting with school officials, the health department identified those who had close contact with the person having TB. They will have a TB skin test on Friday and have the tests checked on Monday, December 17.

In addition, 69 Southport Middle School students will be given a TB skin test on the 17th and have their test checked on December 20. Those students were also identified as potentially having contact with the person having the confirmed case.

Health department officials say school and Perry Township officials have been cooperative in assisting them in creating a proactive response to the situation.

The school has sent letters to parents, held meetings with the high school students and used its telephone- based communication system to share information with parents. Informational meetings have also been held with high school teachers and a meeting is also planned for middle school teachers.
