(UNDATED) - State police master scuba divers are offering tips on how to possibly avoid a tragedy like the one that claimed the lives of a Carmel woman and her three children over the weekend.
47-year-old Batul Abbas, and the children, ages 8, 14 and 18, were in a van that apparently skid on ice and plunged into a retention pond.
Sergeant Chris Lambert says there are several things we can do to survive a similar incident. Wear your seat belt at all times. You have to survive the impact with the water, when the car is in the water, immediately roll your windows down, undo your seat belt, get out and climb on the top of your car, ride your car like a boat and see where it will take you and wait on top of your car until help arrives or the current takes you close enough to shore that you can walk out.
Lambert says it's a myth that you can't roll down power windows under water. He says as long as the battery did not come undone during impact, the electrical system will still work.
