Purdue To Manufacture TB Antibiotic

(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Purdue has begun manufacturing an antibiotic for drug-resistant tuberculosis.

An American lawyer threw a scare into dozens of airline passengers when he defied warnings about his TB to go on a European honeymoon. But he's one of only 10-thousand or so people in the U.S. and Canada to contract that strain of TB -- not enough to make it worth Eli Lilly's while to keep manufacturing the drug that can treat it.

Lilly struck a deal giving Purdue's Chao Center exclusive rights to make and distribute seromycin in the U.S. and Canada.

Lilly has partnered with 13 other organizations to manufacture the drug overseas.
