Organizers Plan Indy Rapid Transit System

Last updated on Monday, December 3, 2007

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Planners hope to settle early next year on the best way to bring rapid transit to the Indianapolis area.

That decision will force more decisions, on how to shape the neighborhoods around the transit stops. Whether you ride a bus or a train, eventually you have to walk. That means having someplace to shop and eat in the neighborhoods where people get on and off.

University of California-Berkeley mass transit researcher Robert Cervero says landscaping, public art, places to stop and rest all go into making a neighborhood walkable.

He told Indianapolis Metro Planning Organization members it's up to them to decide what would best suit Indy.
