(PORTAGE) - A Chicago-bound south shore commuter train has struck a pickup truck that was being driven around barricades at a crossing in Northwest Indiana, killing the driver of the vehicle.

The crash occurred about 6:30 this morning at the Porter-Lake County line.

Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District Spokesman John Parsons says the driver of the truck died. The identity of the driver was not immediately released.

Westbound train service west of the Portage area was suspended for about 45 minutes.
