Hospital Turns Focus On Geriatric Medicine

Last updated on Monday, December 3, 2007

(INDIANAPOLIS) - With the number of older Americans growing exponentially, a local hospital is doing its part to address and bring awareness to the need for geriatric medicine.

St. Francis Hospital opened its new center for geriatric medicine with a conference for industry leaders and healthcare providers to discuss the needs and challenges in geriatric medicine.

Medical Director Dr. Daniel Hurley says while America's aging population continues to increase, the number of physicians specializing in geriatrics is declining. Hurley says unless something changes, there could be crisis shortage of healthcare providers for the elderly.

Friday's conference featured geriatric experts from Indiana University and the University of Arkansas.

Hurley says he expects the center to host more workshops and conferences to continue drawing awareness to the issue.
