First Property Tax Checks Hitting Hoosiers Mailboxes

Last updated on Tuesday, December 18, 2007

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Nearly eight months after legislators approved a rebate for this year’s property taxes, the first checks are finally going out.

But Indianapolis homeowners might end up receiving more than they expected -- or less.

Marion county's property tax hikes were among the highest in the state, with more than half the county's homeowners seeing increases of 30-percent or more. But one out of 15 taxpayers actually got a tax cut, even without the rebate. About the same number saw increases of less than 10 percent.

Senator Teresa Lubbers is proposing taking their rebates away, and giving the money instead to those with the biggest jumps.
