(INDIANAPOLIS) - A new division of the Indianapolis Metro Police force is in its infancy.

The violent crimes unit began working early last month, targeting what they call the "worst of the worst."

Unit Supervisor Sergeant Kerry Buckner wouldn't say how many officers make up the new unit, but they come from various parts of the department and work with everyone.

Buckner says the goal is to get these men and women, many of whom have many pending charges against them, off the streets.

Buckner also says this is not detracting from IMPD street-level manpower. The unit gets a hot sheet each week from the districts, featuring two suspects. That hot sheet can be expanded or dwindled down, depending on the number of arrests.

Buckner says the number of officers on the team can also be shifted, depending on what's on their plates each week

The men in custody so far all have laundry lists of charges, both in Marion County and outside of the area.
