VA Investigating Stolen Computers From Hospital

Last updated on Wednesday, November 21, 2007

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The case of three computers stolen from the Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center is calling attention to a bigger problem. The stolen computers had personal information for about 12,000 veterans.

Even though the data was transferred onto the VA servers, it was still on the hard drive.

Republican Congressman Steve Buyer says the software needs to have stronger security in place to keep the data private.

Buyer is the former chairman of the House Veteran Affairs Committee. The two PCs and one laptop disappeared from the hospital last weekend.

Hospital President Susan Bowers says they've installed more security cameras throughout the building. As for why this happened, Bowers says, "I have a feeling it was merely computers in a room near an entrance."

Letters are going out to those whose information may've been compromised by the theft. The VA is offering free credit reports as well.
