Teen Accused Of Sex Crime, Despite Illness

Last updated on Sunday, October 14, 2007

(LAFAYETTE) - A Lafayette teenager, who suffers from muscular dystrophy, could spend the next 20 years in prison.

A jury found 18-year-old Jarod Chafin guilty Friday of having sexual contact with a now 11-year-old boy -- over the course of five years.

Chafin's attorney, and mother argued the teenager couldn't have physically committed the crimes because he has muscular dystrophy -- and uses an electronic scooter.

However, the prosecutor pointed out that even with his disability, Chafin held jobs and graduated from high school. Chafin will hear his sentence November 28th.

The jury hearing his case did not reach a verdict on an additional charge involving sex crimes against a now 6-year-old girl.
