(INDIANAPOLIS) - Retailers are getting caught less often selling tobacco to minors.
A government study says 10.9-percent of retailers inspected last year nationwide violated the ban on selling to minors. That is the lowest rate since the inspections began.
Indiana is also making progress in reducing sales to minors. Aaron Jones is the operations coordinator for the Tobacco Retailer Inspection Program in Indiana. He says Indiana compliance checks have been slightly better, at 9.9-percent.
Indiana has been conducting the unannounced inspections for six years, and the rates have gone down each year.
Jones says that retailers are aware of the inspections, and have learned that they need to educate their clerks to ask for ID.
