Muncie Man's Appeal Of A Life Sentence Fails

Last updated on Monday, October 8, 2007

(MUNCIE) - A Muncie man serving a life prison term has failed in his bid to pursue an appeal of the sentence he received nearly a dozen years ago.

Larry W. Newton Jr was convicted of killing Ball State University student Christopher Coyle.

Judge Robert Barnet ruled that Newton had been "extensively questioned" about his understanding of the 1995 plea agreement resulting in his life sentence before he accepted it.

Newton failed in a 2002 bid to withdraw the guilty pleas he had entered more than six years earlier, maintaining his defense attorneys had coerced him.
