Mother Leaves Children On Highway, Then Collides With Semi

Last updated on Thursday, October 11, 2007

(AUBURN) - A Garrett woman may face charges after she allegedly deposited her three young children on the side of the highway, then crashed into a semi.

Police received a succession of calls reporting a baby outside the Kruse Auction Park in Auburn, just off I-69. Minutes later, a caller reported a woman had put two more kids out of her car on State Road 205. About the same time, 26-year-old Crystal Gilpan collided with a semi on 69.

State police say Gilpan told investigators she let the kids out of the car because she "knew something was not right." It's not clear what she meant, but Sergeant Michael Toles says Gilpan had been despondent.

The children are fine. Gilpan suffered minor injuries in the crash.
