Indiana Drunk Driving Dragnet Tallies 11,000 Arrests

(UNDATED) - The Governor’s Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving, and the Traffic Safety Division of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute released results of the “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” campaign against drunk drivers.

Officials say the program netted around 11,000 OWI and related citations between August 17th and September 9th.

The report says, for 2006, 273 people died in alcohol related accidents, which accounts for more than 30% of all traffic fatalities in the Hoosier state.

The organizations also announced a few highlights of the campaign, including one arrest in Seymour, where a man nailed for drunk driving decided to duke it out with police, and another was caught with methamphetamine. In Bloomington, police caught one drunk driver who was a habitual traffic violator who had stolen property in the vehicle, and in West Terre Haute, the dragnet netted a woman wanted for dealing meth.
