(KNOX) - Dozens of horses in Starke County were rescued Friday by the Starke County sheriff's department.

Some of those horses were near death. The animals were taken from two properties owned by the same Knox resident. More than 100 complaints had been issued about the animals over the last two months.

In all--deputies found several dead animals and seized 50 horses. Authorities say the horses were malnourished, didn't have access to water, and had likely only been eating straw.

Prosecutors may charge the owner with felony animal neglect. Police are not releasing the name of the 57-year-old suspect.
