(INDIANAPOLIS) - Chemical companies are pledging to be good neighbors when it comes to dealing with the public during an emergency. This good neighbor policy was started in 1997.
Over 20 chemical companies that handle hazardous materials are reaching out to nearby residents with plans on what to do should an accident or terrorist action occur.
Bill Baranek with the Marion County Emergency Planning Committee says that since 1987 the federal government has required companies that handle dangerous chemicals to register with local emergency planners and fire departments. This good neighbor policy is an extension of that.
Baranek adds that if there ever is a spill the best place to seek shelter is in your own home with windows closed and the air handling system turned off.
