Last updated on Monday, October 22, 2007

(MUNCIE) - Five members of an Amish family are dead and eleven others hurt following an interstate van crash Sunday afternoon near Muncie.

The crash happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. at the 49 mile-marker on Interstate 69, four miles north of State Road 28 in Delaware County.

Indiana State Police believe a tire on the 15 passenger van blew, sending the southbound vehicle rolling across the median and into northbound traffic. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Four passengers, including a baby and two other children, were ejected and killed. The driver of the van also died.

Seven air ambulances were dispatched to the scene and flew six patients to area hospitals. The others were transported to hospitals aboard ground ambulances.

All five people killed in the crash are from Rockville, Indiana. Most of the others involved in the crash are from New Haven, Ind.

Police believe the families were returning home after attending a church function in Allen County.

The crash closed the interstate in both directions for several hours. But the interstate has since re-opened to traffic.
