(INDIANAPOLIS) - The second annual conference on Latino Domestic and Sexual Violence is underway in downtown Indianapolis.

Ruby Fleming, program coordinator for the Latino Domestic and Sexual Violence Coalition, says her organization is working very hard to stop abuse among Latinos living in Indiana.

The conference is providing information on how to curb domestic and sexual violence to about 300 service providers from throughout Indiana who work with Latinos.

"We know that there is a big problem with gangs in California, so they are moving here to the Midwest, and they are bringing their children and of course all the crime is increasing a little bit," Fleming said.

One big challenge in stopping the violence is getting Latinos who are being abused to admit it. "It's known that our ancestors say that we have to wash our clothes in our own home--so, it's a cultural issue," Fleming said.

Fleming says the coalition is working to give people the opportunity to talk to someone and get support when they have a problem with domestic or sexual violence. "In the Latino culture, we don't talk about this equation; we don't mention anything about that, even if we have problems at home," Fleming said.

The coalition serves both men and women.
