Daniels Extends Homestead Credit Deadline

Last updated on Thursday, September 6, 2007

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Homeowners who missed the deadline to apply for the homestead credit and deduction have an extra 40 days to fix it.

Governor Daniels says he's not sure how many people blew the original June 10 deadline, but says people shouldn't lose relief they're entitled to for not understanding the system.

The new deadline is October 15, which Daniels says is the latest it can go without causing delays in preparing local tax bills.

Daniels says he'll ask legislators to ratify the move when they open their new session November 20. He says it's unclear whether he has the authority to issue the extension on his own, but says lawmakers in both parties have endorsed the extension and indicated there will be no problem approving it after the fact.

The extension applies to next year's tax bills. Daniels acknowledges the extension is one in a series of small tax-relief steps. He says he's given up on attempts to turn this year's tax rebate into a credit that might bring relief faster, and is concentrating now on crafting a long-term tax reform proposal.

Daniels says any option that does not result in a net tax increase will be considered.
