(COLUMBUS) - A pair of serious accidents on I-65 near Columbus closed the interstate for hours, and left at least 3 injured.

State police in Seymour say shortly after 5:15AM Wednesday morning, a serious accident near mile marker 62 prompted a major response, closing down both directions of I-65 until about 7:30AM.

Not 30 minutes after that, near mile marker 57, a tractor-trailer caused an accident involving an SUV and 2 motorcycles. 52-year-old Richard Youngblood of Brazil, IN approached the backup from the previous wreck in his Volvo semi, failed to slow down and struck an SUV driven by 69-year-old Wanda Frankenberger of Austin, IN. The SUV slid sideways into a pair of Honda touring motorcycles knocking their riders off and then rolled on to its side to a stop.

The SUV's passenger, 69-year-old Roy Frankenberger, was extracted from the vehicle and transported to University of Louisville hospital; the motorcycle riders wore protection from head to toe and were taken to Columbus Regional Hospital with relatively minor injuries.

State police are still investigating the incident.
