(INDIANAPOLIS) - About 45,000 people braved the steamy weather for the first day of the Indiana State Fair. First day attendance over the last few years has been about 60,000 people.

Fair spokesman Andy Klotz this year's total stacks up well if you compare it with 1995, when Central Indiana experienced a similar heat wave on opening day.

Klotz says fairgoers were happy that the majority of the buildings at the fairgrounds are air conditioned, which wasn't the case just a few years ago.

The Red Cross says 100 people were treated for heat-related illnesses. Klotz shrugs off that number as minimal.

The Red Cross has set up water stations, a medical tent, and is offering misting areas for band and drill team members to cool off.
