Last updated on Friday, July 6, 2007

(PERU) - An Indiana State Trooper was shot and killed Thursday in the line of duty.

41-year-old Master-Trooper Detective David Rich was shot on U.S. 24. He had stopped to help 21-year-old Joseph Vultaggio, Jr. of Gaylord, Michigan-- thinking he was a stranded motorist.

Rich was shot once in the chest with a shotgun. Investigators say Vultaggio then reloaded and killed himself.

Police says Vultaggio was driving an SUV that his father had reported stolen.

Rich was 41-years old. He is survived by his wife Connie and three young children.

Rich came from a law enforcement family. His father is a retired Indiana State Trooper and former Sheriff of Miami County. His brother bob is currently a captain with the Indiana State Police.
