(UNDATED) - The Indiana Military Family Leave Act is now in effect.
Barnes and Thornburg partner Nathan Baker says the act will extend employment protections to family members of military personnel.
The law allows a relative of a military member called to active duty to take up to ten days of unpaid leave per year from his job. The leave can be taken prior to deployment, during leave or after a tour of duty is completed.
Baker says the law only applies to employers with 50 or more employees. Small businesses will not be affected by the new measure.
Employees that are covered under the law must have worked for the business for 12 months, have worked at least 1,500 hours during the last year for the company and be a spouse, parent, grandparent or sibling of the military member.
Baker says employees must give their employers 30 days notice that they intend to take the leave.
