(UNDATED) - Customers at the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles stood in long lines Saturday after a glitch in the state computer network tied the hands of BMV employees.
BMV Spokesman Greg Cook clarified that the problem was not with the new computer system that license branches statewide use, but instead was a problem with the state computer network to which the BMV is tied.
Problems with the state computer network were first noticed at 7:30 a.m. and were not cleared up until 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Many customers were racing to the license branch to beat a July 15 renewal deadline for license plates.
Cook says customers who came into the branch were given an extension. However, it's not yet clear what will happen to customers who did not come in to beat the deadline.
Cook says a plan will be created to deal with those customers and their transactions will be a top priority.
On-line BMV transactions were not affected by the network slowdown.
