(UNDATED) - The 4th of July is next Wednesday and police departments across Indiana plan a weeklong traffic crackdown surrounding next week’s holiday.
Ryan Klitzsch with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute says grant money will allow police to mount extra patrols to watch for speeders and drunk drivers. Police at sobriety checkpoints around the state and roving patrols plan to get drunks off the road.
A law taking effect Sunday bars the state from using grant money to conduct seat belt checkpoints. But Klitzsch says officers can and will issue tickets at sobriety checkpoints if you're not buckled up. And he says the law still lets police pull you over if they see your belt isn't on.
