Police Prepare For Reactions To Property Tax Bills

Last updated on Thursday, June 28, 2007

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Marion County Sheriff’s Department will send civil deputies to three township assessors’ offices next week when the new property tax bills start arriving in mailboxes throughout the county.

The bills are expected to be mailed this Friday. Many of those bills are expected to show hefty increases, and Sheriff Frank Anderson says those assessors are apparently worried about the reaction of irate property owners when they see the bills.

Anderson is not aware of any particular threats. Some of the township assessors say they work in buildings with light security and they've made the request as a precaution.

But Anderson points out that any property owner who feels his bill is unfair has plenty of legal recourses and appeals within the system. He says causing a scene with township employees is counter productive, and will only get him into legal trouble.

Anderson says IMPD officers will not be used in the security details, but will be called if criminal law enforcement action is needed.
