(UNDATED) - Indiana power companies are assuring customers that they will have plenty of electricity to handle the demand in the summer heat.
State utility regulators have summoned Indiana's nine electric companies every year since 2000 to give guarantees they're ready to meet demand. The two-day hearing began after two straight years in which utilities came close to imposing rolling blackouts.
Indianapolis Power and Light Vice-President Steve Corwell sees no danger of that this year. He says IPL will have at least 12% more power than needed at all times.
Indiana-Michigan Power President Helen Murray says it will have a 21% reserve margin.
IPL is again offering five-dollar rebates to customers who volunteer to have their air conditioners cycled on and off if supplies do grow tight. I&M says its customers have shown little interest in that kind of program.
The hearings conclude today with testimony from the Indiana Municipal Power Association, Vectren, Nipsco, and the Carmel-based Midwest Independent System Operator, which oversees the power grid for the Midwestern region.
