(UNDATED) - The state has begun its annual Severe Weather Preparedness Week and Department of Transportation officials say they hope drivers take note.
Spokeswoman Megan Kaderavek says drivers often assume their vehicles are capable of driving in any condition, but she notes severe rain or wind can easily disable almost any car, truck or SUV.
She says drivers must not assume they know better than authorities who post signs saying a road is impassable, no matter how well they know the terrain. Also, driving below the posted speed limit is often advisable and allows for the increased stopping distance which is often necessary if the roadway is slicked with water.
In addition, Kaderavek says trying to outrun a tornado is a bad strategy for the long haul. Instead, find a bridge or gully in which you can park your car or escape on foot and seek shelter.
