Police Hitting Streets With Little Training, Study Says

Last updated on Tuesday, March 6, 2007

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A recent poll shows at least 30 states, including Indiana, let some newly hired police hit the streets with little or no training.

But Indianapolis Metropolitan Police say that's not how they do things. Sergeant Bruce Henry is with the IMPD's human resources department. He says new trainees go through almost 12 months of classes before going out on patrol. Henry says that includes a 23-to-25 week program at the police academy.

Henry also notes that new hires are also subjected to what he says is one of the most extensive background checks in the nation, including a psychiatric evaluation and a credit check.
