(GOSHEN) - The Indiana Supreme Court is upholding the sentence of life without parole for a man who pleaded guilty but mentally ill in the 1998 shooting death of a Goshen police officer.

The group voted four-to-one Tuesday that an Elkhart County judge gave the proper sentence.

Frankie Salyers was convicted of killing patrolman Thomas Goodwin. Salyers' lawyer asked the state supreme court to review the sentence, citing his client's severe mental problems.
