(SALAMONIA) - Conservation officers say it will likely take a week to dispose of approximately 150 animal carcasses found in a Jay County ravine.
Officer Gene Ford says the ravine where the remains were found is about half a mile from the nearest home and backs up to a road, making it easy to dump animals out of the back of a vehicle and down the hill.
Ford says skinned raccoons and coyotes make up the majority of the carcasses, but there is also a Holstein calf and a dog among the remains.
He says the current plan is to use an excavator and the muscle of volunteers to clean up the site.
Meanwhile, Ford says information found at the site of the illegal dumping has led his investigation to western Ohio in an effort to find the person or people responsible.
Pet owners in Ohio say they've seen a spike in the number of missing pets recently. Ford did not say if those reports are connected to the Jay County site.
