Pathogen Appears In Portage

Last updated on Friday, August 4, 2006

(PORTAGE) - An oak tree-killing disease has reached Indiana following a shipment of shrubs from Oregon.

The fungus-like disease called Sudden Oak Death surrounds the tree preventing it from receiving nutrients.

A store in Portage discovered a diseased tree and immediately buried it in a local landfill.

Officials at the store were not sure if the tree was the only one with the disease or if others purchased from the store were affected.

The pathogen first appeared in California in the 1990s.
