Interstate Sniper Suspect In Custody

Last updated on Tuesday, July 25, 2006

(BROWNSTOWN) - 17-year old Zachariah Blanton, accussed of killing a man during a Sunday morning sniper attack, is being held in the Jackson County jail.

Blanton, a native of the Delaware County town of Gaston, has been identified as the prime suspect in the interstate sniper shootings. Blanton is reported to live close to where the Delaware County shooting took place on Sunday.

A massive investigation into Sunday's interstate sniper shootings continued Monday and Tuesday.

Delaware County Police, as well as Indiana State Police, searched around the State Road 3-32 interchange near Muncie. The area features just about every type of terrain imaginable, including wooded areas, farm fields, creeks, private businesses and commercial developments.

Officials say progress was being made in the case as they collected some physical evidence. They wouldn't divulge the nature of that evidence due to the ongoing investigation at the time.

Investigators also contacted police in Columbus, Ohio for their insight into the case. Columbus was the scene of multiple interstate shootings several years ago.

The public's help was being requested in the case, no matter how small it may seem. In a news conference last night, State Police said they recieved tips that additional shootings may occur at that time, but they did not know the validity of that information.
