Biotown, USA

Last updated on Tuesday, July 11, 2006

(REYNOLDS) - The tiny town of Reynolds, north of Lafayette, could be the first community in the nation to use renewable resources to power its electricity and gas.

The Indiana Department of Agriculture came up with the idea and is planning to build two 10-million dollar privately-funded plants to use biomass materials to produce the electricity and natural gas. Construction will begin in November with the cheaper electricity to begin next July.

Studies show the 500 residents of what is being dubbed Biotown, USA, will save half from a third to half the money they now spend on electricity.
