State's Students Dropout Rate Highest In Nation

Last updated on Wednesday, June 28, 2006

(UNDATED) - A new U.S. Census Bureau study confirms a negative trend among Indiana high school students.

The 2006 Kids Count Data Book indicates the state's dropout rate is higher than any other state in the country.

Indiana Youth Institute President and CEO Bill Stanczykiewicz attributes the statistic to our heritage as an agricultural and manufacturing state. He encourages parents, teachers, and elected officials to develop a "culture of academic achievement," preparing students for high-tech jobs of the future to improve the rate.
