(UNDATED) - Safety officials are trying to remind people that lawnmowers are very dangerous, and need to be treated with respect.

The last few years, an average of 68,000 people were injured by mowers. Most injuries are severe foot and hand cuts, and amputation of toes or fingers are fairly common. More than 9,000 of those injuries are to teenagers and younger children.

Dr. Tres Scherer, Riley Hospital Medical Director, says every summer he sees several severe injuries to children who were "passengers" on riding mowers, and were run over and cut by the blades. The blades can also throw debris at 170 mph, and there are often burns.
