Medical Study Shows Correlation Between Screening and Savings

Last updated on Wednesday, May 3, 2006

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A study conducted by two Indiana University School of Medicine doctors shows that a national uniform panel of newborn screening tests would not only save lives, but also save money.

Doctor Stephen Downs says that it is unusual for anything in medicine to save lives and money at the same time.

He says these conditions doctors recommend testing for in the study are rare, but he says the impacts of these diseases are so enormous that finding them clearly offsets screening costs.
