Wheldon Tops IndyCar Spring Training Charts
(HOMESTEAD, FL) - IndyCar series spring training began Wednesday and concludes today at Homestead-Miami Speedway in South Florida.
Target-Ganassi Racing turned in the top two speeds with Dan Wheldon topping the chart at 213.312 miles per hour followed by teammate Scott Dixon at 213.277. Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan and Ryan Briscoe all turned in laps in excess of 212 miles per hour.
Fifteen of the sixteen drivers scheduled to practice were on the track with Andretti Green's Danica Patrick missing day one due to illness.
Before yesterday's test session, Tony George and Kevin Kalkhoven met with the media to discuss last week's unification of North American Open Wheel Racing. The 2008 IndyCar schedule remains a work in progress, but George and Kalkhoven did confirm that there will be one final Champ Car World Series race through the streets of Long Beach on April 20th The teams affiliated with champ car will use their old Panoz chassis and Cosworth engines in that race.
Those teams associated with the IndyCar series before the merger will be running at Motegi, Japan on April 19th. Both races will count toward the 2008 IndyCar series championship. They are also looking at adding the Champ Car races at Edmonton and Surfers Paradise, Australia to the 2008 IndyCar schedule.
As part of the deal, George and the Indy Racing League will get all of Champ Car's assets, including the series' traveling medical center, trademarks, history and other intellectual property.
