Colts Save $8-Million, Cut Morris And McFarland
(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The Indianapolis Colts have released linebacker Rob Morris and defensive Tackle Anthony “Booger” McFarland. Both entered the 2007 series as starters and had one year remaining on their contracts.
Morris was the Colts' first-round draft choice in 2000. His 2007 season ended when he suffered a knee injury against Denver on September 30th. McFarland did not make it out of training camp last year, tearing the patellar tendon in one knee during the first week. Both were key figures in the team's 2006 Super Bowl run.
Morris began that season as a backup but replaced Gilbert Gardner as a starting outside linebacker toward the end of the season. McFarland was acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay early in the 2006 season for a second-round pick.
The Colts picked up McFarland when injuries sidelined starting defensive tackle Corey Simon in training camp.
By cutting Morris and McFarland, the Colts will save almost eight million dollars against the salary cap. McFarland was due a base salary of $6.85-million dollars in 2008 while Morris would have made a base salary of $1.1-million.
